This exhibition brought the public closer to a unique and defining period in the life of Vincent van Gogh. Instead of his well-known masterpieces, the exhibition displayed rarely seen works and offered a striking view of Van Gogh’s artistic development. The strength of the exhibition lay primarily in the story and context.
From a low point in his personal life and a region marked by exploitation and poverty, Van Gogh developed an art that ranks among the most beautiful and human ever painted.
The scenography required special attention to lighting, as the BAM (primarily designed for contemporary art) did not meet standard requirements. In collaboration with experts from the Van Gogh Museum, custom spotlights were developed to optimally showcase the colors.
The building posed a challenge for the design of the routing. Strategically placed temporary exhibition walls guided visitors pleasantly through the exhibition and created additional wall space.
To make the low rooms appear visually taller, we developed the concept of framing: smaller colored surfaces were painted on the walls and framed in white. For key works, large frames were placed above the walls. The color concept was coordinated with the most important works, creating a harmonious overall impression and directing full attention to the art.
The exhibition attracted 180,000 visitors and offered an in-depth insight into a crucial phase of Van Gogh’s artistry.
