The design includes two renewed galleries, each with its own collection, angle of approach and atmosphere. The scenography responds both to the great variety of objects and to the need for flexibility in changing displays. The concept is inspired by the layout and ambiance of the world fairs at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
In the 20th-century gallery, Belgian Art Nouveau and Art Deco take centre stage, with objects from all disciplines of the applied arts. The design is deliberately understated, contemporary and timeless. It creates a clear framework that enhances the decorative richness of the styles on display without competing with it.
The 19th-century gallery is built around the theme la vie quotidienne — everyday life in all its facets. The scenography introduces visitors to the major societal changes of that century. Through thematic clusters, the 19th century is presented as a period balancing between tradition and modernity.
The client also aimed for visual cohesion between the different sections — a challenge, given the extensive collection of hundreds of objects.
