War in Short Pants offered a unique perspective on the First World War through the eyes of children. Seven children from seven different countries told their stories, each in their own way and from their own experience: near the front, on the other side of the world, or fleeing on the move.
The children described in their diaries, letters, and drawings how the Great War intruded into their playgrounds, living rooms, classrooms, and villages. With their own pencils and pens, they showed how the war affected their loved ones and touched their dreams and hearts. The audio guide was narrated by youthful voices, as if recounting the impressions for the first time, while contemporary video portraits presented the children directly to the visitors.
Visitors literally stepped into the time and space of the young protagonists. Each child’s microcosm was scenographically designed, with original ego-documents and historical toys, and enlarged toy frames that reflected the personal testimonies and living environment of the child. In this way, the stories were not only told but also tangible and immersive.
