The exhibition followed the chronological story of how Vincent van Gogh came up with the idea of painting his iconic sunflowers. Van Gogh created six versions of a large bouquet of sunflowers in a vase, now spread across museums worldwide. Around the centerpiece, five screens displayed the other versions in sync, allowing visitors to compare them directly.
An extensive educational section highlighted research into the condition of the canvas and earlier restorations. Visitors discovered the painting’s original colors through both digital and physical reconstructions. A Pepper’s ghost installation also simulated Van Gogh’s own display arrangement in a 19th-century museum gallery, as he described in his letters.
For the first time, the back of the painting was shown as well, including the original stretcher bar and nails that Van Gogh himself had added. Interactive installations allowed visitors to experiment with compositions and the space around the vase.
The scenography emphasized the masterpiece placed at the center: the paintings hung against yellow-toned walls, while the educational material on the darker, recessed walls offered additional context separate from the art-historical narrative.
