In the Venetian Galleries, Ostend, Ensor’s imaginary paradise unravels the special bond between James Ensor and his beloved coastal city. Curated by Ensor expert Herwig Todts, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the life and work of the master of the sea.
The scenography brings Ensor’s world to life with colors and materials that evoke the imaginary and the atmosphere of the Belle Époque. Mirror foil highlights his tendency to literally distort reality. A cabinet of curiosities filled with objects and costumes enhances the sense of wonder. This creates a poetic dialogue between Ensor’s imagination and the tangible world that inspired him.
Ensor appears not only as an artist but also as an activist who stood up for the heritage of his city. An installation featuring flags and signs with activist slogans, inspired by The Entry of Christ into Brussels, serves as a powerful concluding image.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the reception desk of the Venetian Galleries was also redesigned, drawing direct inspiration from the building’s characteristic arches.
