This exhibition immerses visitors in the final decade of the 20th century: the 1990s. It places the era in its historical context and shows how social changes and events shaped everyday life. At the same time, the exhibition explores our imagery and nostalgia surrounding the 90s: what does nostalgia do to us, and how do we look back on the recent past? A playful, layered experience — both critical and nostalgic — for young and old, including those who barely remember the 1990s.
The project grew out of an intensive collaboration between curator and scenographer. Together they developed narrative lines, selected objects and supplemented them where necessary. Some original finds even influenced the scenography and were added to the permanent collection, ensuring a constant alignment between design and content.
The exhibition offers an immersive experience with a strong audiovisual component. Upon entering, visitors can take a set of headphones—just like in the 90s—and plug them into screens and objects throughout the visit to listen to audio testimonies and music. Video montages in nineties style, a dedicated “soundtrack” room for each music genre, and a corresponding Spotify playlist (still available today) complete the whole.
