Yper Museum

The Yper Museum tells the over-thousand-year story of Ypres in an interactive experience for the whole family, with separate routes for children and adults. Located in the impressive Cloth Hall, the museum brings together the collections of four former city museums, featuring around 600 unique objects that bring the history of Ypres and the surrounding region to life.

The scenography is soft, bright, and playful, suitable for all ages, and is supported by a soundscape by Tom McCrae. Visitors discover stories, figures, documents, and objects in an interactive way. For children, there is a separate route with games and interactive content, where an RFID wristband personalizes the experience by age and language.

Actress Ilse De Koe plays Kateline, the virtual guide, who, both as a medieval lady and a maid, engages in animated conversations with a cat. Holographic projections, Pepper’s ghost animations, and projection mapping make historical events such as the plague and the iconoclasm tangible and understandable in a playful way.

For this project, we designed a completely new graphic identity, carried through text panels, multimedia, audiovisual installations, animations, and the children’s route. The materialization is inspired by Ypres’ textile history, using sustainable materials and technologies: locally produced textile ribbons, eco-friendly prints, and LED lighting.

The Yper Museum thus offers an innovative, educational, and immersive experience that makes the history of the Cat City accessible to all generations.
