The Museum of the National Bank of Belgium presents the bank’s functions in an informative, educational, and dynamic way. The museum is housed in the restored Union du Crédit de Bruxelles building, an exceptional example of 19th-century bank architecture, which also plays a key role in the scenography.
The exhibition route consists of three circuits:
1. Interactive “control room” experience – visitors explore the bank’s core functions through videos, games, and hands-on setups. Can you keep price increases under control? Ensure there are enough banknotes? Take risks wisely?
2. Historical context – explanations about hyperinflation, the gold standard, and the history leading up to the common currency.
3. A journey through 30 centuries of payment methods – authentic objects are integrated into a visual timeline.
More than 500 original objects are displayed, with special attention to lighting, conservation, and educational support for schools, groups, and individual visitors. The scenography and choice of materials reference the bank’s rich history and harmonize seamlessly with the historic building.
