Judith, a Carolingian princess in Ghent?

In St Peter’s Abbey in Ghent, a cold case from 2006 is being reopened: the mystery surrounding grave S127, possibly that of Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald and the first Countess of Flanders. Archaeologists, historians and bio-anthropologists are combining their expertise to investigate this centuries-old riddle.

Visitors discover Judith’s world through projections, interactive research tables and rare artefacts that bring the scientific investigation to life. The exhibition ends with a participatory component in which the public gets the final say: are the bones in grave S127 really Judith’s?

The scenography transforms the abbey refectory into a research space in two parts: a bright, scientific section with archive cabinets and research tables, and a contrasting historical area designed as dark, intimate treasure chambers. Together, they create a visual dialogue between science and imagination.
