The In Flanders Fields Museum tells the story of the First World War in the West Flanders front region and is housed in the rebuilt Cloth Hall of Ypres. As the first interactive and multimedia museum about the war, it combines broad historical themes with personal testimonies from soldiers, civilians, women, children, and aid workers.
The exhibition is structured around three narrative lines: chronological, thematic, and personal. Personal stories come to life in various ways: through stylized films, small exhibition modules featuring ego-documents, and interactive applications using RFID technology, tailored to the visitor’s profile.
The layout makes optimal use of the spatial qualities of the Cloth Hall. Dramaturgy, lighting, soundscape, and film direction work together to offer visitors a layered, emotionally and historically rich experience.
In 2021, the museum received a major update, including:
· the interactive path Who am I?
· a renewed audio tour for adults and children
· new films, audio installations, and bleachers at The Ypres Salient and The Final Offensive
· multimedia on In Flanders Fields by John McCrae
· digital applications at the Memorial Chairs
· a new display case at Fighting Machines featuring Belgian and Australian uniforms
